Everything begins with family. But with life’s changing circumstances, many parents find themselves struggling in silence behind closed doors, overwhelmed and unable to see a way out.
For Sophia, a mum of four, life changed overnight when her seven-year-old son was diagnosed with leukaemia while her youngest daughter was just six months old. Between intense chemotherapy schedules, frequent hospital stays and the emotional impact of a relationship breakdown, Sophia found herself pulled in every direction as a single parent.
“I felt very alone. It was a very isolating experience,” Sophia recalls. “I pushed a lot of people away and stopped communicating. It was just very overwhelming. I felt like I was losing confidence and my self-esteem was really low.”
The moment that stood out as being particularly difficult for Sophia was not being able to divide herself. She thought that there must be someone out there that could help, even if it was just someone to have a chat to.

“Some of the biggest worries on my mind were am I enough? Am I doing enough? Am I a good enough mum? Am I there for my children? Am I listening to what they need? And I just kind of felt that I wasn’t doing enough. Even though I felt like my whole life was revolving around my children, I still felt like I wasn’t doing enough.”
Struggling behind closed doors, sleep-deprived and experiencing severe burnout, Sophia reached a point where she knew she could no longer carry the weight by herself.
“I just thought, it’s time to just reach out now and not be afraid to ask for help.”
While visiting her local library, she picked up a Home-Start Suffolk leaflet. Taking a brave first step, she reached out for help.
Home-Start Suffolk carefully matched Sophia with a trained volunteer who became an approachable, professional friend, giving valuable time and creating a safe space without judgement.
“I was a little bit scared to open up, wondering if she would judge me,” Sophia admits. “I felt no judgment from her, and it was the small things that made the biggest difference to me. Making a cup of coffee for me, sitting down with me and listening to the hard time that I just experienced, being with my children and just being a listening ear. Someone sitting with me and going through the challenges and making me realize that I’m not on my own. She made me feel human again.”
Our volunteer gave Sophia the time she deserved to be truly seen and heard. From engaging her son with drawing and Lego during difficult recovery days, to encouraging
Sophia to journal her progress, the support offered both practical relief and crucial emotional reassurance.
“Knowing that support was available meant so much to me, because being in the situation that I was in with my four children and not really having much support in place, just knowing that there was someone there that would listen and come in and stand with me in those moments.”

Through small but significant steps, Sophia began rebuilding her confidence and sense of control. Today, her son has completed his chemotherapy, and the family is thriving in their new home.
“When I look back from where I was to where I am now, I can see how much of a difference Home-Start made,” Sophia reflects. “I feel empowered, strong, and peaceful. Having someone stand in my corner gave us hope for the future and helped me believe in myself again.”
